Albert Amelio

Albert Amelio was born April 7, 1955 at St. John's Hospital. He is the oldest child of Albert and Mary Amelio. Albert attended Chartiers Valley High School where he competed in football, wrestling, and boxing. Al continued his boxing and wrestling at California University of Pennsylvania.

Accomplishments in Boxing include:

  • The first of four Diamond Belt Boxing Championships, won in 1972.
  • The Outstanding Novice Boxer title won in the 1972 Diamond Belt tournament, at the 147 lb. weight class.
  • The Open Championship won in 1974, at the 147 lb. weight class.
  • The Open Boxing Championship won in 1975 and 1976, at the 156 lb. weight class.
  • The honor to compete in four national AAU Boxing Championships.

Albert graduated in 1977 from California University with a degree in education, majoring in Industrial Arts Teaching (known today as "Tech Ed"), he joined the Pittsburgh Public Schools after graduation and continues to work in this school district today.

Albert started coaching wrestling in 1988, at Oliver High School. He was part of a pilot program started that year by the City League. In 2000, he was the first coach to have a city wrestler qualify for the PIAA State Championship. Albert then took a hiatus from coaching city league sports, so he could be more involved with his children's activities. In 2008, he returned to coaching at Brashear High School as an assistant coach in both football and girls' basketball.

Since 1992, Al has been an accomplished referee, in both boxing and wrestling.

He is a devoted husband and has been married for 26 years to his lovely bride Debbie. They are the proud parents of three children: Nicholas - 23, Anthony - 22, and Danielle - 19.

Albert and Debbie's passion of the heart is their tireless work and untold hours nursing back to health injured and abused dogs, from multiple shelters. They also provide foster-care for pregnant dogs and their pups until loving homes are found.
